3 tips for safe ATM banking

Depositing – or withdrawing – money from an ATM machine may seem like a simple chore or activity for some. But without the proper preparation or foresight, a simple chore like this can end up to a stressful and – hopefully not – disastrous experience. Here are a few reminders that you may want to consider, on safely using your bank’s ATM.

Check your surroundings
As a precaution, always do take note of your chosen ATM’s surroundings. Notice if it’s accessible and if the area’s properly lighted. If possible, go to an ATM unit with a security guard in the vicinity. This will give you the peace of mind of going to someone, in case something goes wrong. If needed, ask the security guard to keep careful watch on you. Also, check if there are any other people around. If you do see people loitering around the ATM area, or just feel suspicious that someone always seems to stare at you in the area, consider not pushing through with your ATM transaction. You can never be sure, so it’s always safe to be cautious.

Easy In, Easy Out
Plan how much money will you deposit or withdraw even before reaching the ATM. This will save you from spending too much time doing a transaction. Also, make sure you have everything ready. Before heading out towards an ATM, check that you have your cards, wallet and other necessary banking documents with you. Avoid loitering in the area with your cards or wallet in the open. Remember, the more time you spend in an ATM, the higher the chance you’re setting yourself up to be robbed.

Protect Your Cash
If you’ve withdrawn some money, count it in front of the ATM, not outside. Don’t attract attention, make sure you’re the only one that could see the ATM screen. If you’re done counting, quickly stuff the cash in your wallet or pouch. Never show anyone that you’re holding cash in your hand. Also, make sure you keep your receipts. You never know if your account can be traced in the codes and numbers found in that tiny scrap of paper.

Safe ATM banking is not that difficult. By having a conscious presence of an ATM’s surroundings, making use of your banking time and protecting your cash, you can be sure of preventing any mishaps from happening. By having these three guidelines on mind will allow you to protect your hard earned savings.
